I finished a computer with Edubuntu this evening for the 4-year-old, and she dove right in and started working with the various educational games. The Ubuntu Linux base is solid and intuitive, and the educational tools are great (and without the shameless marketing and pandering that so often passes for "educational" software).

After about half an hour of play, the 4-year-old told her mother and me that she wanted to play more "Chicken prix". We were baffled for a moment, until we realized that the GCompris educational suite which she had been working with uses audio explanations extensively (pronounce it as French).
